“Signs & Symptoms” explores and reflects upon the stages of recovery after witnessing a traumatic event. In 2013, Darcy’s mother suffered a major stroke which prompted a reflection on the fragmented memories surrounding the day and years following. By documenting significant locations, he sought closure and an understanding that he had not yet found. Pottery plays a significant role in his mother’s recovery, which led to a collaborative practice between Darcy and his mother to create and document the creation of the sculptural forms that accompany his imagery. The collapsed bowls speak to the imperfect nature of recovery. Some were eventually reworked into something beautiful. Throughout the creation of Signs & Symptoms, he began to see the delicate process of pottery as being emblematic of the recovery process he had experienced.
